Size 4" - 4-1/4" (10 - 11 cm)
Also known as the Bicheno or Double-barred finch.  This bird is well known in the avian community as one of the nicest additions to the collection.  Very pleasant birds, they are immediately recognizable by their unique appearance.  They have been known to sometimes breed while housed in an aviary.  Usually they make good parents and raise a clutch of 3 - 4 chicks.

It can be quite difficult to determine the sex of these birds.  In the photo, the male is in the front.  Notice that his face is whiter and devoid of marks.  A certain distinguishing characteristic is the male's singing when he is separated from the rest of the flock.
