Orange Cheek Waxbill finch
Estrilda melpoda

Country of Origin Africa
Compatibility Extremely sociable.
Difficulty of breeding Moderate - require live food.
Size Length 4" (10 cm)
One of the more economical "exotic" finches for your collection.  These hardy and playful birds seem to fit into any avian environment.  Since they are smaller finches, it seems logical to place them with others of generally their size, such as the Cordon Bleu, Owl, Swee, Strawberry and others in that size range.

The male and female are very similar in appearance.  In talking to breeders that have had experience with this species, the most obvious difference is in the amount and intensity of color in the vent area.  Males seem to be a brighter orange than hens.  In the photo the hen is sitting on the perch.
